Mr. Uellendahl is uniquely qualified to address the prosthetic needs of amputees, especially those who have experienced difficulties in achieving the comfort and function that modern prosthetics technology can provide.
To each client consultation, Mr. Uellendahl brings his unique experience, gained over a 25 year career. He has developed advanced fitting techniques developed through his work in prosthetics research, education, and direct amputee care. Having served on the faculty at Northwestern University's Prosthetic Education Program and as a research consultant for Northwestern University's Prosthetics Research Laboratory over a 15-year period Mr. Uellendahl has a wealth of experience. For twelve years prior to joining Hanger, Mr. Uellendahl served as Director of Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinical Services at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, a world renowned and premier institution for rehabilitative services and the number one rated rehabilitation hospital in the United States. During this time Mr. Uellendahl was involved in treating thousands of amputees, many referred from around the United States and from a dozen foreign countries. Through this experience Mr. Uellendahl honed his skills and continually advanced the "state of the art" in fitting methods, successfully fitting even the most difficult cases. Recognized within the prosthetics profession as a leader, he has frequently contributed to his profession by authoring over 50 scientific papers, book chapters and magazine articles, and is sought as a guest lecturer at national and international educational symposia.
Believing that patient education is key to a successful prosthetic outcome, he authored the popular user guide "Patient Care Booklet for Below-Knee Amputees" also available in Spanish which is published by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.
With the goal of producing a biomechanically sound and comfortable interface for the Above-Knee amputee, Mr. Uellendahl developed and perfected the Northwestern University Ischial Containment Above-knee socket technique which has been taught at Northwestern University's Prosthetic Education Program, an internationally recognized leader in prosthetics education, for over 10 years. This socket system achieves comfort through careful matching of socket contours to the muscular and skeletal anatomy unique to the particular amputee. Optimal success with this system is achieved using an accurate hand-made cast of the residual limb.
Employed by Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics Inc., Mr. Uellendahl has at his command the resources of the words largest provider of prosthetic services with patient care facilities in over 600 locations across the United States.Hanger contracts with a large number of insurance providers affording most amputees access to these state-of-the-art services.
